1. He's Entitled to His Opinion': We Spoke to the Fan Artist Who Went Viral After Music Legend David Crosby Insulted His Tribute Portrait

David Crosby, of the group Crosby Stills and Nash, has been the target of a lot of ire due to his rude response to a fan's post on an image of the 80-year old musician on Twitter. DJB Sackett, who is 54 years old volunteer located in Sheffield, U.K., has begun creating art for the first time in over 30 years following the furlough from work during the pandemic . On the 16th of July the artist posted an illustration of Crosby as a person, wearing an knitted hat of red (a important part of his outfit that was knit with his partner) on Twitter. "Hi @thedavidcrosby," Sackett wrote. "Hope you're doing good health. I took a picture of you. Thanks for the song. In reply, Crosby was, shall we say, not so kind. "That is the most strange portrait of me. I've never seen anything like it don't give up your job." he wrote Sackett had originally posted the portrait, titled Cruz (Paint You a Picture), in May on his Instagram, where he reminisced about discovering the musician's discography in the 1980s I will always be thankful for this and have absorbed and slowly collected Cruz's music over the years, stretching back to his days as a founding member of the Byrd's and forward to the autumnal creative burst of recent years," Sackett wrote. "David Crosby's works showcases his talent to create harmony and melody and is true work that is full of beauty. But when Crosby expressed his distinctly negative assessment of the painting about two months later, social media, like it's used to do, sat up and took note "This is the most bizarre reaction of a fan trying to do something nice that I have ever witnessed. don't take a break from your day work, David Crosby... but perhaps put aside your unkindness in Twitter," writer and photographer Gregory Anderson wrote on the social media site. users have been criticized by many users Crosby for his rudeness when he was responding to a touching tribute. There were also many who disagreed with artist's opinion of the painting, with the exception of one celeb responding with praise for Sackett's fan art. It's like stained glass. Great artwork!" actress Patricia Arquette posted on Twitter.

* Arquette could be onto something:

The work is a kind of religious icon and elevates Crosby into the realm of a saint to music. We spoke to Sackett via email about his work and the overwhelming appreciation he's received since the piece became viral, and what he is feeling about Crosby following what he called "a very odd couple of days.

2. Did you study painting in school? When did you quit? And what are you doing for in the last 30 years? Or, to put it differently what's your current job?

I was raised in Kent near the edge of London. I was only a student of art until I was 14 at school, after which it went under. I was urged to focus on science for my exams and were thought to be more likely to allow me to achieve a decent job. was my primary creative outlet and I was a member of two bands and also on my own for a number of years. I was employed in various positions in London that included the rehearsal studio as well as one of the art centers. My wife and I moved to Sheffield in 2000. I've been employed by the same charity in Sheffield for the past 14 years.

3. What made you decide to create the tribute you have to Crosby? Are you satisfied with the way it turned out? What were your thoughts on his reaction and have you changed your perception of the art or the artist?

In May, I posted images that showed sky trails on Instagram. It made me think of David Crosby, who released an album titled Sky Trails in 2017. It's the third album of five incredible albums that he's released since 2014. I was listening to the album as I drove my wife from work the next day, and I decided to attempt the same painting of him in the way I was seeing him today to commemorate this surge of his career's final releases.

* Are you pleased with the result?:

I was pleased with the work. It turned out to be very religious possibly due to the color scheme.

4. What do you think of his reaction, and has you changed your perception of the work or the artist?

I was disappointed when the artist didn't enjoy it because I had made it to pay tribute to his music. I'm such a big fan of his work. Of course I wouldn't have expected him to be a fan as much, and he's right to have an opinion. I was aware that he has an image of being an uneasy character, and I was not overly impressed by what he said. answer. I'm still awestruck by his work as an artist. I'm very proud of the artwork.

Do you think that the internet is too harsh for you? Crosby:

I can understand why some have been incredibly passionate and fervently to his somewhat brash response to the painting however certain of his personal criticisms of him are difficult to comprehend. I am happy and humbled that many people seem to enjoy the work and it will hopefully like future work I make. The entire situation that has developed about the painting has turned out to be in the midst of amusing, surreal and awe-inspiring.

* When did you get started making art after the pandemic?

I was enthralled by art when I was furloughed by the foundation for a whole year prior to the start in the pandemic. I purchased some inexpensive watercolors, as well as gold and black ink pens and began to draw and paint. I was influenced to paint and draw by Grayson Perry and his Art Club (broadcast during lockdowns at lockdown on Channel 4 in the U.K.) that was a huge influence on me. I also was a fan of Martin Rawson, a U.K. political cartoonist whose work was published within the Guardian He also hosted regular #Draw challenges that satirized figures in the political arena. I took part in several of them events, which kept me busy. As I work part-time for the organization I'm able to devote time in the week to to improve and refine my self-taught, naïve style.

* What's your process of creating art like?

I've got a strong determination to show the world around me , in terms of U.K. and world politics and other events, mostly through simple techniques for illustration using cartoons. In recent times, I've made digital works to keep up with politics, employing simple graphics to convey ideas and messages quickly to highlight the failures that is the present U.K. government and in support of Ukraine as well as other issues. My primary passion, and my work that I take the most enjoyment from, is my less obvious figurative and abstract work. Sometimes I see a particular figure or scene in my head and draw out my ideas before moving on to the main piece Most of the time though the colors change in the same way as the piece. The majority of my abstract pieces start with a rush and swathes. Sometimes I visualize shapes and paint them with black, gold and silver inks in order to bring the scene to life. Some designs remind me of mythical, primitive and Celtic old styles, along with graffiti and modern abstract works. The imagined objects, creatures and human figures then emerge when the paintings become more complete. The gold I used to ink that I use was purchased as a mistake, but it has become a part of my work

5. What are you planning to doing with this Crosby portrait? What's next for you as an artist?

I'd like to put more of my artwork in the public domain and grow as an artist. I'm still learning to master. Perhaps I should start selling my art and perhaps exhibiting more in the event that there's a market for it after it has cooled down.
